The first thing we consider is which turbine bowl we should be selecting when we work on a water system. We look at the specific applications that the turbine bowl will be used for, how often it will be used throughout the day, and how much use the turbine bowl will see on an annual basis, as well. After that, we take a look at variable speeds or flow pumps if they are suitable for your water system’s needs, how much time in a day that each unit is estimated to operate as well as the life span or even the efficiency of the unit we’ve selected.
After we finish up with the turbine bowl selection, we also take a look at the discharge head. This is the point where the column of your water system, or the vertical riser pipe, attaches to the horizontal discharge pipe. First, we look at whether it will be a usual cast-iron discharge head, but they can also be made of fabricated steel for higher heads or deeper sets. After that, we make sure to apply the proper sealing of the discharge head, but we won’t get into too much detail there.
Next up, we select the proper driver, which is usually mounted to the discharge head. Usually, this consists of a vertically mounted electric motor that is directly attached to a pump, and also drives that specific pump’s usage. That, or we may use a right angle gear drive, which can convert power from a horizontal source into vertical pump rotation. Now, we could potentially use a combination of both for special occasions, and in this instance, we could have the motor drive switch over to the gear drive automatically in the case of a failure too.

If you haven’t already heard about the ZIKA virus, then we’re glad you stopped into our blog, because we want to inform as many people as possible. Yes, this virus is serious, as the World Health Organization has already ranked it a “public health emergency of international concern,” which we’ve seen in the past with the H1N1 pandemic as well as the Ebola outbreak back in 2014. What exactly is the ZIKA virus though, you might ask?
Some people infected with the ZIKA virus may not show symptoms, and others may show mild symptoms. The symptoms that this virus can cause include fever, rash, joint pain, red eyes, muscle pain, and headaches. Symptoms can last any from a few days to a couple of weeks, and once a person is infected one time, they will likely be protected from any future infections of ZIKA. So what makes this virus so risky?
There are a few things to keep an eye open for when it comes to the ZIKA virus. If a pregnant woman is infected with the virus, her baby could have a birth defect in the brain, which is called microcephaly, and other severe brain defects as well. There could be defects of the eye, hearing deficits, or even stunted growth. There are also some signs of Guillain-Barré syndrome in some people that get affected as well.
There are many ways that this virus can be spread, unfortunately. One of the most common ways that it can be spread are through mosquito bites. If a mosquito bites a person that is infected with the ZIKA virus, then bites into another person who is not affected, they will catch it. This is especially dangerous for outdoor works, and OSHA has even gone out of their way to give recommendations for keeping outdoor workers safe from ZIKA, but we’ll talk about that in a minute. Generally speaking though, employers should be warning their workers about the risks of being exposed to ZIKA to keep their team safe.
Generally speaking, to avoid infection, you’ll want to wear long-sleeved shirts and pants, and treat your clothing/gear with permethrin. When it comes to using insect repellent to avoid mosquito bites, you’ll want to use one of the EPA registered insect repellents, and it must have one of these active ingredients: DEET, picaridin, IR3535, or oil of lemon eucalyptus or para-menthane-diol. Make sure not to use insect repellents on babies less than two months old though, as it could be harmful for them. At home, you’ll want to stay in cooler areas, especially with air conditioning, and keep all windows and doors shut or screened off so that insects can’t get in. Lastly, make sure to use protection during intercourse, as ZIKA can be transmitted sexually as well.

Everyday, oxidation happens all around us. Depending on where it happens though, the results of oxidation could either be beneficial or harmful to the surroundings. We wanted to take a brief moment to discuss oxidation within the water industry, because we’ve heard some interesting stories from the Water Well Journal surrounding whether oxidation is a friend or foe to groundwater, which directly affects our industry. Before we dive into it though, what exactly is oxidation?
1. The combination of a substance with oxygen.

Yes, oxidation is when oxygen unites with another substance, but could this be beneficial or harmful to groundwater? Let’s take a deeper look.
Over time, chemists discovered that oxidation does not necessarily always require oxygen in order to take place. Sometimes it can simply be a transfer of electrons between two elements or ions, where one substance can lose electrons to an oxidizing agent. Now, after this was established, scientists established the “oxidation state” of each of the known elements. This means that as elements react with other elements, electrons are transferred, and the oxidation state of the elements changes. There are many types of oxidation reactions that can occur, but let’s look at some of the few most common.
One of the most common reactions that can take place is within fire or combustion, because heat and light are generated due to an electron bond breaking .The smoke that is produced from a fire would be considered the oxidized product of this specific reaction. Another common oxidation reaction is found in respiration, or when life forms breathe. We start by inhaling oxygen, but we exhale carbon dioxide. The oxygen we inhale is used to oxidize organic nutrients in our body that is found in our foods, and the yield from this oxidation reaction is energy that we use every day.
Now that we have a bit more of an understanding of oxidation reactions, let’s look at how it affects groundwater, specifically within corrosion. Corrosion happens when a material deteriorates due to the interactions the material experiences with the surrounding environment. Many forms of corrosion that take place within the groundwater industry are a result of the electron transfer process between materials, causing one of the materials to deteriorate. There are many types of corrosion though, one of which that we observe in the groundwater industry that is directly affected by the absence of oxygen. This form of corrosion is called concentration cell corrosion, and it can develop underneath deposit buildups on structures or equipment that can cause severe damage. Periodic removal of this buildup can reduce this type of corrosion from occurring, but it is still something we have to keep a close eye on.
There are also microbial influenced or induced corrosions that can occur as well, and this can include the production of acids or enzymes. This can cause degradation as well, and is most commonly found when bacteria oxidizes with iron. It could be a residual problem with water wells as a result, and is another thing that we as water professionals keep an eye on periodically.
Now, oxidation is not just a bad thing for the groundwater industry though, because it does have some positive effects as well. We can use oxidation to help with testing water or improving water quality. It all started back when Dr. John Ryznar had created the “Nail Test.” With this test, a nail is placed in a glass containt with aquifer water and then observed over a 24 hour period. If there was a chemical reaction that caused the water to discolor, we knew there needed to be some disinfection of the water supply taking place. Over time, we have been able to develop disinfection processes that need the application of oxidation chemicals, so within this scenario, oxidation is a very good thing.
At this point, we have various oxidation chemicals available within the groundwater industry, including hydrogen peroxide, potassium permanganate, bromine, and more commonly found, chlorine. These agents all help us with water cleanup and disinfection, this way we can keep our families healthy and safe. We recently have hit a statewide drought advisory for Connecticut’s current water condition. This means that moving forward this summer, the conservation of water will be incredibly important. There could be many negative effects of drought if things were to get serious. Economically, farmers could lose money from destroyed crops, businesses that depend on crops/livestock could suffer, businesses with boating/fishing equipment may see a decline in their numbers, and water companies may have to spend money on new or additional water supplies. We could see the loss/destruction of wild fish habitats, some wildlife migrating, increase stress on endangered species, poor soil quality, and more.
Droughts generally speaking result in a lack of rain or other forms of precipitation, and by now, we’ve all experienced the lack of rain first hand. Here in Connecticut, we haven’t seen any water precipitation with the extreme temperatures we’ve seen lately, but hopefully it won’t last too much longer for the sake of our state. With the weather being against us recently, it’s incredibly important that we begin to conserve water, as you may have already seen in the news.
So what can we do? Well, as we mentioned, water conservation is incredibly important. Here are some ways that you and your family can practice water conservation to keep Connecticut in a good state for the time being:
Take baths instead of shower, or have a shower bucket.
Turn off the sink when you brush your teeth and/or wash your hands.
Don’t flush the toilet over excessively, only when you need.
Fix any leaks in any of your plumbing.
Re-use liquid to boil pastas.
Take shorter/faster showers.
Don’t run a dishwasher and/or washing machine unless they’re completely full.
Access your water in early morning (the cooler temperatures will mean less water evaporation and you can store it for later).
Fill up your sink with soapy water when hand watching an excessive amount of dirty dishes.

Unlike anything we've heard of before in the past, we recently heard about how one oil rig crew in California came together with water well rig professionals to unconventionally aid with drought relief. California, was recently in a bit of a dry spell, but one team, headed by Scott Belknap in Dinuba, California, figured out a way they could help.
After having a conversation with a salesman of Atlas Copco named Joe Beloso, Scott Belknap was able to learn that a piece of equipment called the Atlas Copco RD20 could be used as a water-well drilling device. Traditionally speaking, the RD20 is a 120,000 pound powerhouse and is fully capable of pullback strong enough for the oil fields, but it turns out that the RD20 is also compact enough to take on municipal water wells and agricultural water wells too.
Beloso got on the phone with his colleague, Ray Kranzusch after their talk, who connected Beloso with some of the top RD20 hole contractors in the oil and gas industry, and from there they developed a mutually beneficial solution for both the water and oil industries.
"Although RD20s were developed for presetting casing in oil and gas projects, Kranzusch says their use in other applications is not unusual, ranging from ventilation shaft drilling and creating grouted pilings, as well as drilling water wells," as explained to us by the Water Well Journal.
That being said, the crew was able to put the RD20 to work with no extrenuous amount of additional time or training, as they would normally with unfamiliar rigs. While working under a water well contractor, the crew was able to use a reverse circulation technique with the RD20 while making the transition. It was a perfect situation, since Scott Belknap is quite familiar with the area, since his family has lived in California for almost 100 years.
Belknap told the Water Well Journal that, "We don't need a map to tell us 7 miles that way, you'll be drilling in 'Old Faithful,' getting 1000 gallons per minute, but 10 miles this way, you'll be lucky to see 20 gpm."
With his knowledge of the land's agriculture and his connection with the local community, his history within the area helps Belknap get his done easily and efficiently. At the end of the day, the switch from drilling into water wells instead of drilling into oil patches was simple and effective for this crew using the RD20 and reverse circulation techniques. All in all, the cooperation between the water and oil professionals was great for the agriculture of this California town, as well as for some of California's driest areas, and even more drillers are showing an interest in this new innovative technique.
Although we normally say that water and oil don't mix, this tactical solution to drought relief in California shows us that when great minds come together, anything is possible.

If you haven’t already heard in the media by now, Flint, Michigan is in the middle of what we’d like to call a serious water crisis. There is huge controversy and a debate on whether or not Flint’s water meets healthy drinking standards. Government officials are trying to cope with the public as a whole, but for the most part, the people are not having it because they truly believe the water is unhealthy to drink on a regular basis. The problem with Flint’s water is that the lead levels are much higher than most areas, and now, The Lead and Copper Rule, which dictates that amount of lead that is allowed in order for water to be considered healthy drinking water, is now under consideration for revision in response to Flint’s crisis. There is now pressure on the EPA to raise healthy drinking water standards, and although the The Lead and Copper Rule was not set to be revised until 2017, there is a good chance now that it could be revised much sooner. Even officials in the state of Ohio are calling for the revision of this rule, especially after the town of Sebring, OH also had a surplus of water that was not considered healthy for drinking by the current regulations. The head of the Ohio EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), Craig Butler, has actively called for the citizens of Ohio to test their own water on their own accord. He says that 60 days is far too long for a resident to go without realizing they could be consuming lead-contaminated water, and urges the local citizens to test their water today instead of waiting.
Now, the country is turning to President Obama, who is in charge of the water budget moving forward into the new fiscal year. Obama released a $4.1 trillion budget in February for the fiscal year of 2017, where he takes a stand in his case on energy and environmental friendly initiatives. $260 million of this budget is set to go toward activities that specifically boost the data and research focusing on these water issues, as well as $88 million being handed to the National Science Foundation to help them understand and increase the overall U.S. water supply.
What does this mean for us here in Connecticut, or the future of the water industry? Overall, the people in charge are responding pretty positively to the problems that have been put into focus surrounding the water crisis in Flint, which is great for our industry. This means there could be healthier drinking water standards on a national basis, which is in fact a good thing. Get this: each person, on average, uses about 120 gallon of water in just one day. For a family of four, this could mean using about 480 gallons in just one household per day, and for a family of five, that's going to be upwards of 600 gallons a day.
Shocked yet? We imagine you might be with numbers like that. The thing about the water industry, though, is that the marketing and selling of “going green” is nothing new to our space. At first, it almost seemed like going green would just be a fad or phase that would pass, but we can proudly say that the industry is always looking for ways to be more efficient and more green-friendly.
Here’s something else you should think about. With a one horsepower motor on your water pump at $0.13 per kilowatt-hour, with a 10 gpm pump, you would spend roughly $5 per month to provide water to a four-person household. That being said, we’d also like to mention that this could be compared to a cable bill, which is (on average in the United States) roughly $98.15 a month (data comparison provided by Water Well Journal). This is shocking. It only costs $5 a month to provide water to a family with the water industry’s initiatives to go green, yet we can spend nearly $100 a month on cable at the same time. That’s a deal you simply can’t pass up.
The only alternative to a point-of-use private well system would be to have longer lines of pipe that could deliver water from a community-based water system. Unfortunately, the problem with that is that it could be a heavy cost if leaks were to happen, and it could even use more energy just to move the water along. Point-of-use water systems have become efficient in their delivery for just about anything, and that’s including water. With technology on the rise in our industry, and the leaders of our industry focused on making our processes and procedures more green friendly and efficient, we are proud to say that the water industry is always changing for the better.
The Ground Source Heat Pump Market’s New Standards
That’s right, there’s a new standard in place for ground source heating water pumps, and it’s good news for everyone.
“A binational standard for the design and installation of ground source pump systems for commercial and residential buildings has now been published by CSA Group, a leading American National Standards Institute and Standards Council of Canada accredited developer of standards, codes, guidelines, and personnel certification programs.” – Water Well Journal
Long story short, this standard is official, and came into place after stakeholders everywhere called for the standardization through a neutral third party, to set guidelines for installation and design of these ground source heat pump systems. But what does all this mean exactly?
Well, for the water experts, it means that we have new standards to follow when dealing with these types of systems. These standards are meant to “harmonize the differences between existing resources, simplify referencing in regulations and contract, incorporate the latest advancements, clarify compliance using standards language, and provide credibility through an accredited neutral standards development process," as also stated by the Water Well Journal. Not only that, but both the NGWA (National Ground Water Association) and the IGSHPA (International Ground Source Heat Pump Association) have taken the initiative to enter an agreement, specifically a signed memorandum of understanding, which will strengthen the relationship between these two organizations to support the new standards for ground source heat pump systems.
So what does this all boil down to for you, the customer? Essentially, these changes are a very good thing for anyone that has a ground source heat pump system. The process will be safe, streamlined, effective, and efficient. Let’s take a look at how these changes have affected our industry more recently, one of which is the development of the VFD, or a variable frequency drive. Prior to the development of this device, water motors and pumps were started by a QUD, also known as a quick disconnect. The quick disconnect was only made up of two parts, being a relay and a capacitor. Nowadays, the QD is being replaced by the VFD, which is made up of several of hundreds of components that allow the VFD to do the same job, but more efficiently. Although both of these devices are used to start the motor and pump, you’ll notice an immediate difference in the constant pressure of your water if you install a VFD, and trust us, the pressure is great compared to the QD! By using a VFD, we can get your water pressure almost equivalent to that of city water, even if you have a private well at your home.

As you can imagine, there are a lot of health risks that can come with drinking contaminated water. Health Risks Associated with Contaminated Water
There is a variety of health risks associated with poor water quality for your water supply. If you drink contaminated water, the risks could be anywhere from minor physical illness if it’s not that severe, but when it’s more serious, it could result in deathly illnesses.
